How much tsunami relief is too much?

Currently, the total aid promised to the tsunami relief efforts is more than $3 billion US. Austrailia leads the pack, next is Germany, followed by Japan and fourth is the U.S., according to this AP story:

This disaster has reached astronomic heights in terms of significance. Even China has joined the party, pledging $63 mil US. This from the supposed up-and-coming superpower seems disproportionate, and it is.

The truth is, there are several areas of mass suffering across the globe. It seems the genocide and religious persecution occurring Darfur, Sudan somehow doesn't tug on the media's heart strings like Indonesia. While it is true that the tsunami is attributed with 150,000 deaths compared to only tens of thousands in Sudan, there are 2 million Sudanese who have been displaced from their homes. I'll wager their living situations are similar to the refugees of the tsunami. Where's the love here?

The answer is simple. In Sudan, Arabic racism and Islamic jihadists are doing the murdering and raping. But, presently, the media considers the Arab and Islamic worlds cute and misunderstood, so we will not hear a negative word towards them. Further, Sudanese Christians are being slaughtered, so, of course, they deserve it. In contradistinction, the tsunami can be blamed on Mother Earth, making it the perfect cause to rally around. The cherry on top is that environmental activists can take this opportunity to condemn global warming. I can't wait till Al Gore emerges from his cave to bless us with more prophesy.

I'm not giving anymore to tsunami relief unless I hear a reason why this is more worthy than all of the other areas of mass suffering in the world.

Can the world really handle this much truth concentrated in such a small place on the web? I fear that the answer might be 'no.' Oneway, I recommend you employ a security detail immediately before your site gets huge and the folks over at dailykos.com get all riled up and try to take you down. Can a blog be cannonized?

I agree with TJ. Even though there are blogs such as mine that tackle the real issues (cool jackets, the Cardinals, and new soap), there are ones such as our friend here who talk about actual issues. Well done. All.

Yeah...you shouldnt give anymore...

That'll show 'em.

But who are you fighting here? The tsunami victims or the media?

Oh and what have you done for the Sudanese?

I am merely stating that there are other worthy endeavors to support but that will never receive the attention that the tsunami victims have due to prejudice.

Marcella, although I don't know you, I appreciate the exhortation to do more than inform others of the plight of the Black Sudanese. While rejecting any inferred need to validate my statements with further action, I am, nevertheless, so moved by your eloquence that I have decided to join you, if only for a brief moment, in your model lifestyle of helping all of those that need aid. Thank you, you truly are an exemplar to all.

I will match any amount of money that you send to Care USA. Here is the link:
