Rhythmic Art

the_dude's cathartic tale reminded me of that unique catalyst: live music.

Ninety-nine percent of the drummers out there playing music can't hang with the man I'm going to see Sunday night on the north side at Martyrs':

Dave Weckl, jazz fusion virtuoso.

Turn up your headphones (not earbuds), click here and then please tell me you can fade him.

Martyr's is a cool venue...it's small enough to seem intimate, but there's little corners if you want to hide from everyone else. I saw an urban brass fusion band there...they have a lot of brass and jazzy instrumental bands there.

Hey, if you're gonna be at Martyr's, stop by my place before-hand. We live about 1/2 a mile north of there. I should be around late Sun. afternoon until about 6:30.

Philthy,

The new profile pic is hot. You should rock a Phillies hat. Actually, no, don't, because I wear one sometimes.

Westy,

Thanks for the invite. After the Bears took 6 years of my life on Sunday, I was in no shape to come visit. I barely made it to the show at 8 PM. I'll have to take you up on that next time, though.

the_dude,

Very perceptive. The traditional style is unknown to the "Green Day has such an awesome drummer" crowd. You've displayed where you stand.

The Dave Weckl Band was awe-inspiring. Blistering solos from all facets; sax, keys, bass, and of course, the skins. Beyond the remarkable technical prowess flowed genuine joy; the hallmark of true artisans. Tight show, all in all.

Abe, TJ was in band grade 5 through 12, and then for awhile in college...of course he noticed how the guy holds his sticks! Noticing such a thing is second nature to him :)
