Sometimes I long for a world that is black and white. I don't mean in a moral sense. I don't mean that I want the world to be transparent. I don't want it to be simple to make moral judgments. I don't want it to be easy to determine one's own belief system. I just want people to HAVE beliefs.
Oneway's post on 1984 clearly shows the kind of grey society that we are turning into. Granted, he refers to a court decision in Germany, America is never far behind the trends of Europe. Let's take it home: Larry Summers just resigned from his position as president of Harvard. Why? Because he privately spoke to Cornel West about the complete lack of academic work that has come from his office, and he tried to have an open discussion with faculty about why women are under-represented in the "hard" sciences. What happened to him? Cornel West called him a racist and the faculty called him sexist. He was forced to resign because he tried to be honest and make people think. No wonder he was fired. How the hell do you expect to be the president of a university if you are honest and try to make people think?
I'm really getting tired of it all. I'm tired of people being skewered because they have an idea. I'm tired of having to bend over backward for what is "accepted" in American society. I have no desire to control people's thoughts, no desire to stifle discussion, no desire to avoid arguments. I never want to hear the phrase, "You can't say that!" ever again. I'm tired of the politically correct world that we live in.
I want a world that is full of passion and color. I want a world that is painted in blacks and whites. This grey is turning my stomach.
