Destroying History and Stirring up Violence

What will probably be the most remembered and shameful bombing in Iraq history resulted in zero casualties. It is widely suspected that Sunni extremists were behind the destructive bombing of the gold dome of the 1,000 year old Askariya mosque. No casualties were reported, but this shrine was of incredible significance to Shia Muslims. The Iraqi government as well as religious leaders have condemned the event and called for calm and unity.
Militant Islam is notorious for trying to erase the history of its enemies, and I see this as another such example. Thankfully, the religious and government authorities are trying to calm the Shia people to prevent further violence. It is intention of Islamic terrorists everywhere to draw people into civil war. In Iraq it is Sunni terrorists that desire to draw Shia's into civil war. Reacting to this bombing with more violence would be a victory for the terrorists. Many Shia have retaliated by attacking Sunni Mosques. Thankfully, the Iraqi authorities have stepped in to restore order.
This shrine was of particular significance becuase it holds the tombs of the 10th and 11th Shia Imams. After Mohammed died the two major sects of Islam were created: Shia and Sunni. Each followed different leaders they believed to be the real successor to Mohammed. The 10th and 11th Shia Imams are buried under this dome. The 12th and final Shia Imam disappeared without a trace.
In comparative Christian terms: this would be like someone destroying Notre Dame or the cathedral where St. Peter or St. Paul is buried.
3 bombings occured this week, 2 of them claimed the lives of 40-some people. The 3rd bombing of the golden dome resulted in no casualties. Without casting judgment in one direction or the other I predict that this latest bombing of the historic Shia Shrine will be considered the most significant; indeed, the most significant bombing in modern Iraqi history.

Was it in Afghanistan or Pakistan about 5 years ago when that large statue carved into the cavern was blown up?

Either way, well written post.

Holmerica Industries,

That's a good historical reference. It was in 2001. The Taliban used artillery, tanks, and anti-aircraft weaponry to destroy two giant statues of Buddha that were carved into the cliffsides.

General,

The news reports today seem to reflect your dire prediction may be true. We should pray for the nation of Iraq.
