Perhaps the most dramatic measure of the gulf that separates Muslims from the Western world comes in their response to this question: Do you believe that groups of Arabs carried out the attacks against the United States on Sept. 11, 2001?
By wide margins, Muslims living in Muslim countries say they do not believe this to be the case. The least skeptical Muslim nation is Jordan; even there, a majority (53%) says they do not believe Arabs carried out the attacks. The most skeptical nation is Indonesia, where 65% say they do not believe it and just 16% say they do, with the remaining 20% expressing no opinion.
In answer to question "Why do they hate us?", many respond that it is because of our allegiance with Israel and our general foreign policy. Maybe it's because they believe ridiculous lies? Even a casual internet search hits on a plethora of sites that believe 9/11 was a hoax and/or was orchestrated by Jews/Christians/Americans. Personally, I've encountered Arabs in America (an elderly Palestinian to be more precise) that believed that the holocaust didn't happen, that the Jews run the U.S. Government, the media, most of Danville, Illinois, is Jewish, and there are 100 million Jews living in America. Now, I wouldn't care one way or the other if there were 1,000, 1 million, or 100 million Jews in America, but claiming that there are 100 million is objectively false.
We need to be alot more honest about the culture that we are dealing with. They consistently choose to believe lies because they make Arab Muslims look better, and Jews and Americans look worse.
Our legitimacy in the War on Terror depends the facts and our intentions. The fact is we were attacked. The attack drew our attention to the radicalization of Muslim states, and their hostility towards the West. Our intention is to promote decentralized power, taking it away from radical tyrant dictators and putting it in the hands of the general populace. In so doing, we hope to stabilize the Middle East, stabilize the oil economy that is so important to the world's economy, and to spread religious freedom, political freedom, and economic prosperity.
If you don't believe the facts, it's impossible to believe the motives, and if you don't believe the motives, then you necessarily believe that the stated objectives are not the real objectives.
It's for this reason that I don't think appeasing radical Islam will ever work. Number one they don't respond to it, and number two, they won't BELEIVE it!
